IRS-Trained Volunteers Will Guide People through the Tax Prep and Filing Process
The April 15, 2014 deadline for filing State and Federal income tax returns is less than a month away, and for people seeking help preparing those forms the days are dwindling.
So now is the time for individuals and families to visit one of the two IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) centers in Newark managed by the nonprofit Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) and supported by Investors Bank. The ICC’s VITA Program centers provide free tax help to families or people making $52,000 annually or less and needing assistance in preparing their own tax
For the fourth consecutive year, Investors Bank is providing a facility, furniture, and office equipment to support the ICC’s IRS-trained volunteers. The tax assistance volunteers are managed by the ICC’s Program Coordinator and paid part-time workers. Tax assistance staff will meet with filers at two locations in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood up until the filing deadline.
Here are the locations and schedules for the ICC free tax prep services:
- Investors Bank branch at 275 Chestnut Street (second floor) in Newark
Monday to Thursday, 4:00-8:00 PM
Saturday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM
- ICC’s Family Success Center East at 29-31 Cortland Street (just off Ferry Street) in Newark
Wednesday and Thursday, 3:30-7:00 PM
At each location, the volunteers will help taxpayers with basic income tax return preparation and the electronic filing of their Federal and New Jersey State returns. ICC’s volunteers can also inform taxpayers about special tax credits that they may qualify for such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
ICC has been offering this free tax assistance service for over a decade, and since the 2007 tax year over 3,800 taxpayers have asked the organization for tax filing help. For example, by turning to ICC, individuals or couples have saved over $8.76 million in Federal and N.J. State tax refunds as well as Federal and State Earned Income Tax Credits since the 2007 tax year.
With Investors Bank’s support, ICC’s staff processed 1,001 tax returns during the 2012 tax year compared to 741 the previous year.
In announcing the alliance, Investors Bank’s President and CEO Kevin Cummings said, “We are proud to work with ICC, which provides many services to Newark’s people and neighborhoods.”
Joseph Della Fave, Executive Director of the ICC, added, “At a time when families especially need every dollar to make ends meet, our program is helping people receive the tax or EITC refunds they deserve. We are proud to work in partnership with Investors Bank for the fourth year in a row. In turn, these hard-earned dollars are reinvested into our community’s local supermarkets, shops and other businesses.”
