“Family Workers” staff Community Provider Preschools throughout Newark that are part of the early childhood education program funded by the State and formerly known as the “Abbott” Program. These “family workers” connect parents to needed resources, help boost parents’ involvement with their child’s educational experiences, and educate parents on healthy child development.
Through a State contract, ICC Social Workers (MSWs) supervise, train, and support Family Workers throughout the City and at a center in Elizabeth. Our Social Workers meet regularly with Family Workers both individually at their centers and in group meetings to provide ongoing support and development.
Family workers foster social relationships between parents, identify and address service needs, and serve as a liaison between families and service centers so teachers can focus on educational matters. When a child completes preschool at the Ironbound Children’s Center, for example, our family workers help parents enroll their children in kindergarten – a daunting task to navigate in an overcrowded school system.
