ICC offers its deepest condolences

Ironbound Community Corporation offers its deepest condolences on the passing of esteemed Council President Mildred C. Crump

Newark Council President Crump’s legacy is marked by extraordinary distinction and a profound impact on our community. She was the voice for the voiceless, the voice for the unheard, and a powerful advocate for Black women. Her relentless work for equity and justice inspired not only Newark but communities across the nation.

Her dedication to the Ironbound and ICC’s mission was evident in many pivotal moments. In 2016, she joined us for Ironbound History Day, celebrating our community’s rich heritage alongside ICC staff and residents.

In 2020, she was present with ICC and other stakeholders in the Terrell Homes’ Tenant Association’s movement to preserve the affordable housing complex. More recently, in 2022, Council President Crump sat on the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s bi-partisan panel because she understood the potential impact of the proposed PVSC plan to construct a $180 million gas-powered generator. Her involvement underscored her unwavering commitment to environmental justice and the well-being of Newark’s residents.

Current ICC CEO, Hazel Applewhite, had this to share:

“A soldier for equality, she fiercely advocated for the underprivileged and underserved. Council President Crump was also a champion for education and family services, ensuring that essential resources were accessible to all.”

Joe Della Fave, Former ICC CEO, also expressed his condolences saying:

“Mildred was a dear friend of ICC. As a true Councilperson-at-Large, she represented the entire city. She regularly attended community meetings and events that ICC held in Ironbound, from festivities at Down Bottom Farm to EPA Hearings to meetings at Terrell Homes. She was concerned about everyone, fought for all, and held the city dear to her heart. I was blessed to know her not just professionally, but also as a friend. We will miss her.”

These efforts, among countless others, reflect her steadfast dedication to ensuring fair and equitable living conditions for all, especially those in the Ironbound community. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside her and, even more so, to have benefitted from her leadership, compassion, and vision.

Council President Mildred C. Crump’s memory will forever inspire us to continue the fight for justice. May she rest in power and eternal peace.
