Newark ICE Raid Press Conference

Newark ICE Raid Press Conference

January 25, 2025

January 24, CEO Hazel Applewhite delivered a powerful speech following the ICE raid in Newark’s Ironbound section.

Newark, NJ – January 24, 2025 – The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) strongly condemns the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Newark, which have sown fear and uncertainty among our immigrant neighbors. These actions disrupt the lives of countless families and undermine the safety, stability, and cohesion of our community.

As a pillar of support for the Ironbound community, ICC stands in unwavering solidarity with those affected. Every individual, regardless of immigration status, has the right to live without fear of deportation and to access essential services with dignity. These raids are not isolated events; they send shockwaves through families, schools, and businesses, fostering an environment of anxiety that jeopardizes our shared sense of security.

Applewhite spoke passionately about human and civil rights, the American immigrant experience, and the importance of working together as a community.

“You have rights.” Applewhite said. “We are here for you.”

Newark Municipal Council members, U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, Assemblywoman Shanique Speight, and organizations like NJAIJ, La Casa de Don Pedro, and AFSC also came together to speak out.

In response, ICC is redoubling its commitment to advocate for justice, equity, and compassion. We are actively engaging with local, state, and federal leaders to prioritize policies that protect vulnerable populations, promote inclusion, and uphold human rights. We urge our policymakers to move beyond punitive immigration enforcement and invest in building communities that thrive on mutual respect and understanding.

ICC’s Immediate Actions

To support those impacted by these raids, ICC will:

  • Host “Know Your Rights” Workshops: Free community meetings to inform residents of their legal rights and provide resources to navigate these challenging times.
  • Expand Access to Services: Continue offering a safe space and vital programs for families, individuals, and children in the Ironbound area.
  • Strengthen Partnerships: Collaborate with community organizations, legal advocates, and local leaders to amplify our collective voice and provide direct support to those in need.

We call on all Newark residents to come together in a spirit of unity and resilience. Now more than ever, it is crucial to support one another, reject fear and division, and reaffirm our commitment to justice and compassion.
