Ironbound Community Corporation Celebrates 55 Years of Service at Changemakers Gala
Newark, NJ – November 14, 2024 – The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) marked its 55th anniversary with a spectacular Changemakers Gala at the Avenue A Club. The evening, led by Chief Executive Officer Hazel Applewhite and her dedicated team, was a vibrant celebration of ICC’s enduring legacy of service to the Ironbound community.
The event featured Councilman Lawrence Crump, whose infectious energy set an uplifting tone, and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who delivered a stirring keynote address. Mayor Baraka emphasized the critical role of community-driven initiatives in navigating today’s challenges, applauding ICC’s unwavering commitment to social impact.
The gala proudly honored local legislators with the Sr. Carol Johnston Community Service Award for their steadfast advocacy on key issues affecting Newark and beyond:
- Senate Majority Leader, Senator M. Teresa Ruiz
- Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin
- Deputy Speaker Assemblywoman Shanique Speight
Their tireless efforts on environmental justice, education equity, and family leave benefits exemplify the values ICC has championed for more than five decades.
Special recognition was also given to ICC’s foundation partners, whose transformative support has bolstered critical programs like Newark Stays, which addresses housing security in the Ironbound community. Honorees included:
