Ironbound Community Corporation and City of Newark Host East Ward Community Food Hub in Response to SNAP Disruption

November 14, 2025

On Monday, November 10, 2025, the Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC), in partnership with the City of Newark, hosted the East Ward Community Food Hub at South Street School located at 44 Hermon Street.

The East Ward site is one of five food hubs established across Newark—one in each ward—as part of the city’s emergency response to the temporary discontinuation of SNAP benefits.

East Ward Councilman Mike Silva, ICC CEO Hazel Applewhite, and more than 25 ICC staff members were on-site to welcome and serve community members.

To date, over 2,000 families and community members have received fresh eggs, milk, meats, fruits, vegetables, and a wide range of nonperishable items.

The initiative ensured households had immediate access to healthy food options during a moment of heightened need.

Although SNAP benefits have since been restored, Newark’s food hubs remain open to support residents facing ongoing food insecurity.

Updated hours of operation: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3PM-7PM, and Saturdays, 12PM-3PM.
