2025 Changemakers Cocktail Gala: Newark Rising – Celebrating 56 Years!

On Thursday, November 6, 2025, Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) proudly celebrated its 56th Anniversary at its 2025 Changemakers Cocktail Gala at the iconic Avenue A Club, located in Newark, New Jersey.

This year’s theme, Newark Rising, reflected the spirit of resilience and progress that defines ICC’s work and the city it serves, honoring decades of service, advocacy, and impact in the Newark community.

The evening was expertly guided by Master of Ceremonies Richard Cammarieri, a respected community leader and longtime advocate for social and economic justice who spoke on the importance of change and how “we choose to change things for the better.” Guests were inspired by a powerful keynote address from Dr. Brittney Cooper, award-winning author, cultural commentator, and Rutgers University professor, who spoke about “world-makers and space-takers,” the importance of community solidarity, justice, and visionary leadership in shaping Newark’s future.

ICC was proud to recognize and honor a remarkable group of changemakers whose leadership and partnership have strengthened Newark and beyond:

  • United Way of Greater Newark, recipient of the Economic Empowerment Award, was recognized for advancing equitable access to resources and opportunities for families across the region.
  • Earthjustice, honored with the Environmental Justice Award, was celebrated for its unwavering commitment to environmental advocacy alongside communities fighting for clean air, water, and land.
  • Nancy Zak and Arnold Cohen, recipients of the Sr. Carol Johnston Award for Community Service, were recognized for their decades of grassroots organizing and policy work that have improved housing, environmental, and social conditions in the Ironbound and throughout Newark. During the program, East Ward Councilman Michael Silva honored Zak’s transformative contributions and announced that the field house at Riverbank Park will be named in her honor.
  • Leonard S. Thomas (Lenny) was honored posthumously for his outstanding dedication to community empowerment and his tireless work uplifting Newark residents. Long-time friend Marc Roberts accepted the award on Lenny’s behalf.

At-Large Councilwoman Louise Scott-Rountree presented official resolutions and shared a letter from Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, which read: “The City is proud to recognize you for the many contributions you have made and will continue to make.” Councilman Silva’s recognition of Nancy Zak, including the announcement of the Riverbank Park field house naming, further underscored the city’s appreciation for community leaders who have shaped Newark’s progress.

The gala brought together hundreds of supporters, community partners, elected officials, and local residents to celebrate ICC’s ongoing mission to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable Newark. Proceeds from the event will support ICC’s year-round programs in human services, early childhood education, environmental justice, and community development.

“We are so grateful for the incredible support of our partners, sponsors, and community members who continue to believe in our work,” said Hazel Applewhite, Chief Executive Officer of ICC. “For 56 years, we’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with the people of Newark, ensuring every family has the opportunity to thrive. This year’s gala reminds us that Newark’s strength lies in its people, and together, we rise.”
